Brussels Matters alert: EU orders Ireland to recover upto €13 billion from Apple (30/08/16)

Earlier today (30/08/16), DG COMP issued a Decision ordering the Irish Government to require Apple to repay to Ireland up to €13 billion plus interest in alleged State aid.

You can find the EU Commission’s quite detailed press release but no memorandum (so far) athttp://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-16-2923_en.htm

You can view Margrete Vestager’s press conference at http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I125411
(it’s worth listening to the Q&As in particular).

Interestingly, there was a very strong hint in the press conference to other EU countries to review DG COMP’s data collected during the investigation and to decide on the basis of that information whether Apple Sales International and Apple Operations Europe’s commercial risks, sales and other activities should have been recorded in their jurisdictions, thus making them liable to tax in those EU countries and not in Ireland.

Commissioner Vestager also answered questions about possible changes to the US corporate tax code.
